Small yard.
Long evenings.

I'm Ivo, a model railway enthusiast in Lancaster. Hawthorn Fold is my fictional little goods yard: three short sidings, a few wagons, and enough decisions to keep the kettle busy.

Keep the railway small enough to finish

I began with a much larger plan that would have taken over the room. It looked impressive on paper and left nowhere to sit. The present yard fits along one wall, with space in front for a chair and a mug. Cutting the plan down made it possible to start laying track instead of redrawing the same ambitious curve.

There is no continuous run. An evening is a short sequence of arrivals, sorting, and departures, with time to notice a stiff coupling or a wheel that dislikes one joint. I enjoy the slow work as much as the running: a shed wall cut square, a point that moves freely, or a wagon rolling smoothly through a place that used to catch it.
